My assignments: a showcase of work

Assignment 1: Pitch

This artifact demonstrates my ability to use a rhetorical lens to analyze a topic. The artifact is my research pitch for ENC 1102, where I chose visual rhetoric and applied it to sports highlight videos on Instagram and TikTok. In my pitch, I explain that visual rhetoric focuses on how images and videos influence audiences. I also discuss how elements like camera angles, slow motion, music, pacing, and text overlays can change the way viewers experience a game or athlete. This work shows the learning outcome because I took a broad topic and narrowed it to a specific area that I could analyze. It also shows that I understand how visual choices can persuade audiences and shape their reactions.

Assignment 2: Annotated Bibliography

This artifact demonstrates my ability to find, evaluate, and use sources to support a research topic. The artifact is my annotated bibliography for ENC 1102, which focuses on visual rhetoric in sports media and how digital visuals influence audiences. In this assignment, I selected and analyzed five sources related to visual rhetoric, sports communication, and digital media. As shown in my annotations, I summarized each source and explained how it connects to my research on sports highlights and social media. This work shows the learning outcome because I used credible sources to build my understanding of the topic and explain why each source would be useful for my research. It also demonstrates that I can evaluate information, make connections between sources, and use research to support my ideas about how visuals influence audiences in sports media.

This artifact demonstrates my ability to analyze and synthesize information from multiple sources. The artifact is a video recording where I discussed the conversation surrounding visual rhetoric in sports media using the sources from my annotated bibliography. In the recording, I explained how the sources connect with each other by showing that they all discuss the influence of digital media and visuals on sports audiences, while also focusing on different aspects such as social media, sports culture, and audience interpretation. I also identified common themes and explained a research gap by pointing out that the sources do not fully address how specific editing techniques in short sports highlight videos affect viewers' opinions and emotions. This work shows the learning outcome because I did more than summarize sources; I compared ideas, found connections between them, and used those connections to develop a focused research question for future study.

Assignment 4: Methodology

This artifact demonstrates my achievement of the Inquiry and Research Student Learning Outcome. It shows how I developed and narrowed my research question to focus specifically on sports highlight videos on Instagram and TikTok. It also demonstrates my ability to choose an appropriate research method and create a plan for analyzing how visual editing techniques influence the way audiences view athletes and sporting events.

Assignment 5: Revision Project

This artifact demonstrates my achievement of the Revision Student Learning Outcome because it shows how I acted with intention on feedback throughout the writing process. After receiving feedback, I narrowed my topic from sports media in general to sports highlight videos on Instagram and TikTok to create a more focused research question. I also revised my research plan by clearly explaining why textual analysis was the best method for my study and by identifying specific visual elements I would analyze. These changes strengthened my project and made my argument and research plan more clear and effective.
