My chosen lens is visual rhetoric, which examines how images, videos, and other visual elements communicate meaning and influence audience perception. As explained in the AIGA Colorado article on visual rhetoric, visuals are not just decorative, but are used to persuade, inform, and shape interpretation. I am applying this lens to sports highlight videos on Instagram and TikTok because I have noticed, through my experience playing soccer, how editing choices can shape the way viewers experience a game or athlete. Instead of studying sports media broadly, I am focusing specifically on short-form highlight reels and how techniques such as camera angles, slow motion, music, pacing, and text overlays are used to create excitement and influence audience reactions.
